The Medina

Choosing a quarter in the Medina of Marrakech

The Medina is not a uniform whole. Two riads a few hundred metres apart can offer a very different experience.

Proximity to parking, ease of access on foot, the width of the alleys and the distance to the main routes all affect daily life, but also how any building work unfolds: in some alleys materials only arrive by handcart.

The quarter also matters for the kind of property you are after. Some areas hold more traditional houses left untouched, others have heavier tourist activity and therefore more guesthouses in operation.

For a purchase it is worth visiting the area at several times of day and looking beyond the riad's door: the immediate neighbours, the footfall, the noise, the light depending on the hour.

Knowing the quarter well then lets you place the property in its context rather than reasoning on floor area or asking price alone.
